China has formally passed a new controversial security law, giving it new powers over Hong Kong which lead hundreds to turn out to protest the legislation.

The new law’s key provisions, will give Beijing powers to effectively curtail protest and freedom of speech over the special administrative region.

Naturally, critics say the introduction of this law amounts to a breach of the “one country, two systems” principle.

Earlier in May, scuffles had already break out between Hong Kong lawmakers with the predictable passing of a controversial bill that would criminalize abuse of the Chinese national anthem, including it’s use for commercial purposes.

Clashes broke out in Hong Kong’s legislature after an announcement that pro-Beijing lawmaker Chan Kin-por was elected chair of a key committee.

With this victory, a controversial bill that would criminalize abuse of the Chinese national anthem, including it’s use for commercial purposes, will be passed shortly. Fines could go up to 50 000 Hong Kong dollars and prison sentences up to 3 years.

The growing concern is that this is just the latest page on what seems to be another step towards the end of the “One country, two systems” constitutional principle of the People’s Republic of China (describing the governance of Hong Kong and Macau).
