Beirut explosion: footage shows massive blast shaking Lebanon’s capital

Guardian News

Aug 4, 2020 / 0.40 min

Apparently, although not yet confirmed, the cause of the explosion, according to the Lebanon’s interior minister, has been stores of ammonium nitrate.

More than 2,750 tonnes of it as it seems had been stored in a warehouse for six years without safety measures.

Although the explosion itself is massive, the shockwave is what strikes us as most impressive. You can almost feel it through the screen of your device.

This footage of a mass being broadcast online (due to covid-1) just helps to understand how strong that shockwave was.

There are already some videos of the aftermath as well showing windows blown out, streets littered with debris and cars upturned by the strength of the blast(s).

Coronavirus: Conspiracy Theories: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

Hoaxes and conspiracy theories have been plentiful since the pandemic began in March, with some online groups and websites claiming there is no virus or that 5G networks somehow cause the illness.

It never ceases to amaze us how people are happy to believe any nonsense they hear, especially online. Even though, as John Oliver pointed out, conspiracy theories have long been around and their appeal is undeniable.

Still, one would expect people would fall for elaborate theories, with plenty of evidence to back it up. Instead it’s always the most idiotic concepts possible.

Hong Kong: Scuffles and arrests during protest on 1st day under new security law

Ruptly

Jul 1, 2020 / 2.14 min

China has formally passed a new controversial security law, giving it new powers over Hong Kong which lead hundreds to turn out to protest the legislation.

The new law’s key provisions, will give Beijing powers to effectively curtail protest and freedom of speech over the special administrative region.

Naturally, critics say the introduction of this law amounts to a breach of the “one country, two systems” principle.

Earlier in May, scuffles had already break out between Hong Kong lawmakers with the predictable passing of a controversial bill that would criminalize abuse of the Chinese national anthem, including it’s use for commercial purposes.

Bolsonaro’s tribute to Covid victims

The Jornal

Jun 25, 2020 / 1.52 min

Never has the expression “stranger than fiction” made more sense than when the president of the Brazilian Tourism Board went live on Facebook, with Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro, to play Ave Maria on the accordion in honor of Covid19’s victims.

Bolsonaro has been a covidiot since the very beginning of the pandemic, so at this point it’s hard to be surprised by anything he does or says.

So, we thought!

This time, Bolsonaro had his Tourism Board President show up to play the accordion (very poorly) and then leave without saying one word. It was one of the weirdest things we’ve ever seen.

I mean, it would be weird enough if it was just some random guy doing this on YouTube but this is the president of a country?!

How low can this guy go, is the only question at this point.

Florida’s Anti-Maskers Are Taking a Stand | NowThis

The amount of cringe in this video is surreal.

Palm Beach County residents warn of satanism, death & pedophilia as they spoke against the mandatory use of masks.

(Commissioners voted unanimously in favor of requiring face masks to be worn inside public buildings to help prevent the spread of Covid19.)

After watching this we don’t know if we wanna laugh (this seems like something straight out from the show “Parks and Recreation”), cry or feel scared for the mental health of these folks.

After Donald Trump’s first campaign rally since the Covid19 pandemic took hold in the USA,  it’s definitely worth revisiting this video.

What can be funnier (and scarier at the same time) than Jordan Klepper’s compilation of greatest hits at a Trump rally? Not much we reckon.

We can’t fail to notice an alarming similarity between this video and a Coronavirus Lockdown Protest we’ve posted recently though.

Anyway, with the new election coming up in the U.S we guess it’s safe to assume there will be plenty more of these sorts of videos shortly, to keep us all entertained  (or not, in case social distancing rules are still in effect until then).

Netflix Is A Joke

Jun 12, 2020 / 27.20 min

Need help understanding the protests going on in the USA?

Dave Chappelle, in an incredible twist of fate doesn’t even have to tell jokes. He as become one of the most powerful voices in America, by just voicing his opinion in a funny but mostly serious and undeniably political way.

This is not your average comedy set (not only because of the unusual setting) and Chappelle starts off by acknowledging it as he asks the audience “Is this weird?”

The jokes are scarce and he mostly focus instead, on listing other accounts of police brutality (and police culture, that prevents/doesn’t reward a officer from telling on another officer for their wrongdoing) towards black man and women.

Chappelle storytelling abilities allow him to wrap all this behind his personal experience, in what is a very compelling performance.

John Cleese vs Extremism

As in John Cleese own words recently, it’s “Hard to tell if I recorded this 30 years or 10 minutes ago…”.

In the last decade or so, as social media have grown in importance and taken a huge place in our lives, we’ve been pushed to believe that extremely polarized views are a recent phenomenon, though nothing could be further from the truth.

In fact, this has always been the case, social media has just facilitated and amplified how fast those polarized opinions and feelings can be shared.

If there is a documentary you need to see, following last week events, it’s this one. Absolutely unbelievable to watch history repeating itself, time after time.

Will we be watching the same events unfold, some 30 odd years from now?

Video at Buffalo protest shows police pushing 75-year-old man

CBC News

Jun 5, 2020 / 1.26 min

Everything about this video should ashamed the Buffalo police department.

For starters, why would you push a 75 old man like that? Even if you assume it was an accident, next you have one officer leaning down to check on the injured man before another officer urges the colleague to keep walking.

As things couldn’t seemingly get worst, the Buffalo police department decided to blatantly lie by saying that during a “skirmish involving protestors, one person was injured when he tripped & fell.”

However that didn’t hold for long, as this video became public, which clearly showed that the man only fell because two officers he tried to talk to shoved him.

To make matters worse, in the aftermath, dozens of Buffalo police officers were angered over their fellow officers’ suspensions and resigned from their jobs.

Talk about adding fuel to the fire!
