China’s Great Flood as seen from the sky

RT

Impressive drone footage shows the great extent of the worst floods in at least 30 years in China.

Not surprisingly, many of the causes for these floods can be tracked down to human intervention.

Some experts claim climate change is partly to blame, since rains were caused by increased vapors arising from the Indian and Pacific oceans.

On the other hand, although local governments in recent years have made steps to implement nature-based flood mitigation strategies, the ever-growing Chinese population has forced a large number of lakes and other wetlands to be reclaimed into farmland or urban development. The shrinkage and disappearance of these lands is inevitably an important reason for the aggravation of flood disasters.

There are also some concerns that the Three Gorges Dam (built in part to deal with floods), is unable to deal with severe events, which somewhat defeats its purpose.

Beirut explosion: footage shows massive blast shaking Lebanon’s capital

Guardian News

Aug 4, 2020 / 0.40 min

Apparently, although not yet confirmed, the cause of the explosion, according to the Lebanon’s interior minister, has been stores of ammonium nitrate.

More than 2,750 tonnes of it as it seems had been stored in a warehouse for six years without safety measures.

Although the explosion itself is massive, the shockwave is what strikes us as most impressive. You can almost feel it through the screen of your device.

This footage of a mass being broadcast online (due to covid-1) just helps to understand how strong that shockwave was.

There are already some videos of the aftermath as well showing windows blown out, streets littered with debris and cars upturned by the strength of the blast(s).

A BBC team and a number of tourists luckily escaped with minor injuries when lava flow mixed with steam, coming out from Mount Etna, caused a huge explosion.

Though  the last major eruption was in 1992, mount Etna often comes to life in short, violent bursts called paroxysms, so we’ll all definitely be sure to wear a hardhat if we ever come as close to it, as this folks did.

Record heavy rain has caused massive flooding and landslides in western Japan.

More than 76,000 residents were issued evacuation orders by local authorities, in Kumamoto and Kagoshima.

Roads have been cut off and several bridges have been washed away by the floodings, as well as mudslides have also been triggered by the rains, leaving at least two dead, more than a dozen missing and others stranded on rooftops waiting to be rescued, officials said.

Spectacularly scary!

Saint-Malo, a walled French town on the coast of Brittany, has some of the highest tides in Europe.

Water can rise 12 meters over the course of six hours. When the water goes out, it reveals several kilometers of ocean floor. But during the high tide the beach can disappear completely.

The highest tides, also known as Spring tides, occur at the time of the full and the new moon, when the Moon and the Sun are in alignment with the Earth and their gravity is addictive.

Security camera shows Air Canada’s near miss

Mercury News

May 2, 2018 / 00.39 min

Security camera footage shows the moment when an Air Canada plane nearly landed on four fully loaded airplanes lined up on a taxyway on July 7, 2017.

In the aftermath of this incident the National Transportation Safety Board found some issues with the flight crew (fatigue during the flight and that the first officer was twice rejected in his application for promotion) but also that another pilot landing at San Francisco International Airport that night, complained about construction lights, which were overly bright and therefore made it difficult to find the proper runway.

According to aviation experts this close call could have easily led to one of the worst aviation disasters in history, as the fully loaded planes were carrying upward of 1,000 passengers.

On March 2011, one of the biggest earthquakes ever recorded was felt in Northern Japan. Tsunami warnings went up immediately, allowing for people to look for higher ground.

It’s from these vantages points that most of the raw footage available on YouTube was taken.

In some cases the ground wasn’t all that high, as is the case with this video.

PS: The guy that parked his car at the high point on the road surely had one of the scariest experiences of his life.
